Valves in action -
Back pressure regulator UV 5.1
Pump protection at a green plant fiber factory

Plant raw materials shape our everyday lives in many areas. The plant world is an inexhaustible reservoir and provides basic materials for animal hygiene, food and medical products, cosmetics and the production of sustainable and environmentally compatible goods such as clothing, furniture or insulating materials. Functional fibers serve as additives, process or starting materials in almost all areas of modern industry. Cellulose powder, for example, is used as a moisture regulator, release agent or carrier for other additives.

UV 5.1

A world-leading German company in green plant fiber technology develops and produces fiber products as well as process and semi-finished materials from renewable plant raw materials, e.g. from algae, cereal and fruit fibers, wood, and cellulose derived from them. The manufacturer uses chemical and mechanical processing methods. In terms of sustainable resource management, emphasis is placed on the use of waste-free raw material and secondary raw materials from production substreams. The company generates electricity for its own production from hydropower and biomass.

Task // Protection of cooling water pumps

The processes require a large amount of steam and water. The cooling water is pumped by various pumps, distributed in the plant and temporarily stored in tanks. Fluctuating load conditions in the system can cause inadmissible overpressures. The pumps have to be protected against overload in the closed circuit to avoid heating and cavitation in the system. This is where the Mankenberg back pressure regulator UV 5.1 takes over the task of pump protection. It responds proportionally to the pressure increase when the set pressure is exceeded and gradually dissipates the power.

Solution // Back pressure regulator UV 5.1

The UV 5.1 back pressure regulator opens the valve after the set response pressure is exceeded and reliably protects the pumps from overload in the closed circuits. The UV 5.1 controls the upstream pressure without additional auxiliary energy. At the control unit, the upstream pressure to be controlled is in balance with the force of the valve spring. If the upstream pressure rises above the value set on the adjusting screw, the valve opens. If the pressure drops again, the valve closes slowly until full closure after the response pressure has fallen below the limit.

The diaphragm-operated and spring-loaded proportional regulator is made of deep-drawn stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance and soft-seated valve cone. The compact and lightweight valve has high control precision. With the self-acting UV 5.1, the manufacturer of the fibrous materials optimizes the efficiency of his entire plant and has an important tool for sustainable resource management.
